Graduate Student Pedagogy Training

Revised Policy (D.3.a): In establishing teaching qualifications for an educational trainee (as defined in Policy 6-309) or other graduate student who is the Instructor of Record for a Course Section, the Course-Offering Unit should ensure that the individual either completes training or a Course on teaching in higher education either before or concurrently with the teaching assignment or has comparable, prior experience in teaching in higher education. Examples include a training or a Course offered by the individual’s home unit or the Martha Bradley Evans Center for Teaching Excellence, or through other means.  

Complete pedagogy training developed and offered by the department.

Recommended Training Criteria: 

• Backward course design via learning outcomes 

• Syllabus construction and posting  

• Classroom management and student behavior supports 

• Assessment design and grading techniques  

• Active learning strategies 

• Educational technology (e.g., Canvas, AI) 

• Accessibility and accommodations 

Complete a course on teaching in higher education offered by your department.

Recommended Course Criteria equalling approximately 10 hours: 

• Backward course design via learning outcomes 

• Syllabus construction and posting  

• Classroom management and student behavior supports 

• Assessment design and grading techniques  

• Active learning strategies 

• Educational technology (e.g., Canvas, AI) 

• Accessibility and accommodations 

Complete the asynchronous training online

Complete a non-credit online pedagogy course designed for graduate students who are teaching or preparing to teach in higher education. This is self-paced and fully online with a certificate provided upon completion. 

Course Criteria equalling 10 hours: 

• Backward course design via learning outcomes 

• Syllabus construction and posting  

• Classroom management and student behavior supports 

• Assessment design and grading techniques  

• Active learning strategies 

• Educational technology (e.g., Canvas, AI) 

• Accessibility and accommodations

CTLE 6000 Teaching in Higher Education

Discussion and practice of fundamental teaching methods. This class prepares individuals with the foundational pedagogical knowledge and skills to fulfill their teaching mission in an institution of higher education.

Course Outcomes: 

• Apply a student-centered approach to lesson planning and delivering instruction in a variety of classroom contexts.
• Integrate active learning strategies into your lectures, discussions, and online activities for enhanced student engagement.
• Create an inclusive and supportive learning environment that promotes belonging and safety for all students.
• Design a course using the backward design model that aligns outcomes, assessments, and teaching strategies.
• Develop effective teaching tools, including syllabi, lesson plans, assignments, and assessments, based on the best pedagogical practices.
• Use research from educational psychology to facilitate how students attend to, process, remember, and apply information they learn.
• Critically reflect on your own teaching practice and articulate a personal philosophy of teaching that is grounded in evidence.
