This workshop will cover some of the identities among first-generation college students
and the obstacles they encounter while attending higher education as well as best
practices that faculty, graduate teaching assistants, and staff members can utilize
to create more welcoming classrooms and spaces for first-generation students and pedagogy
strategies that can support students’ learning.

Supporting Transfer Students
In this workshop, we will cover how many transfer students attend the University
of Utah and some of the identities among transfer students. Additionally, we will
discuss why students transfer and the obstacles they encounter while transferring
such as culture shock. Finally, we will cover some
pedagogy strategies that faculty, graduate teaching assistants, and staff can utilize
to best support them within the classroom and the campus community

We will cover the foundations of specs grading, followed by a structure utilizing
the specs grading framework. Lastly, a discussion on student outcomes including transparent
expectations, student autonomy, and reduced subjectivity when grading.

Navigating Difficult Conversations in the Classroom
Learn concrete strategies for navigating difficult conversations in the classroom
with inequity and contentious issues. Planning with intentionality to create an environment
of trust and belonging. From understanding how to approach incivility in the classroom,
to navigating “hot” and “cold” moments in discussions, this workshop will offer many
different tools for these inevitable conversations.

The Science of Note-Taking
Is it better for learners to take notes by hand or on a computer? How does cognitive
load factor into note- taking? What are the best note-taking methods? What is the
best way for learners to study with the notes they have taken? How can an instructor
facilitate learners’ note-taking? This workshop will address these
questions and more.
